LIVE PREVIEW: The Growlers

The Growlers @ Cactus Club – Milwaukee, 2/25/15

A lot of California-bred bands carry surf/garage rock vibe around with them, but “beach goth” is a unique genre The Growlers reserve for themselves.  The term perfectly describes the five-piece’s style that consists of reverb heavy guitar, surf vibes mixed with a little bit of honkey tonk and 80’s post punk. The band’s unique sound surpasses a few classification labels, with the ability to cover an array of genres and come out with something unique and unmistakable.

In September of last year the group released their strongest piece of work to date, Chinese Fountain, a followup to 2013’s Gilded Pleasures and Hung at Heart. After 8 years and nearly 150 shows per year, the bond between the group has only expanded, allowing the guys to hone in on their “gypsy folk dirges and psychedelic sea shanties.”

“The band played better than they’ve ever played,” states lead vocalist Brooks Nielson, “we’ve got the process down now. There’s less screwing around to get the songs laid out and we weren’t waiting around for take after take. We knew it and we played without much time to spare.”

The guys will be playing a show at Cactus Club, an intimate club in Milwaukee on February 25th, which is a real treat for fans to see a band that is gaining more and more deserved popularity with each live performance. Tickets are available for purchase here.
